The purpose of the present study was to improve the treatment of patients with fractures of their shin bones, which damage the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis, by means of designing a fixing apparatus and device for surgical treatment of the above damages. The study material is represented by results of examination and treatment of 87 patients with damage of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis accompanied by fractures of the shin bones. The methods of the study were as follows: clinical examination, subjective and objective assessment of the ankle joint function and assessment of the patients’ quality of life, X-ray examination. For the first time, a principally new fixing apparatus was designed, grounded and patented for restoring the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis; this apparatus is characterized by a combination of a preset fixation of the shin bones on the syndesmosis level with provision of the optimum three-plane range of movements in it. For the first time, a device was designed for creating a preset position of the shin bones on the level of syndesmosis and controlling this position in order to prevent development of synostosis in the distal tibiofibular joint.
