The article is dedicated to the memory of an outstanding surgeon of the XIX century, Professor of the Department of Operative Surgery and Director of the Surgical Clinic of Kharkov University. His most significant achievements in surgery and public activities are described. His services in the development of celology, abdominal and contaminated surgery are pointed out. W.F. Grube was one of the founders and heads of the Kharkov Medical Society (1869-1891), founder of The Kharkov Medical Newspaper (1872), initiator and editor of The Proceedings of the Kharkov Surgical Society (1886).
