Abstract

Objective: to determine the status and structure of children's disability due to vertebral pathology. Methods: With help of mathematical methods for the statistical processing of socio-sanitary data a comparative analysis of abundance of injuries and spinal pathology among children, and indicators of child disability in 2012 was conducted in eight regions of Ukraine — Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zakarpatian, Chernivtsi, Kirovohrad, Kherson, Poltava and Sevastopol. Results: Level of disability due to spinal pathology among children has no direct relationship to the prevalence of this pathology which may be due to severity of spinal diseases, lack of common methodical approaches to the definition of disability signs of a sick child, and the quality of the provision of orthopedic and trauma care for children in the region. In structure of children's disability due to injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system pathology of the spine is (19,46 ± 1,76) % in average. Herewith the amount of children recognized as disabled persons due to this disorder increases. Peculiarities of the structure of children's disability on nosologies depending on age were revealed. In children surveyed (77,83 ± 0,06) % accounted for dorsopathies, (19,90 ± 0,06) % — for congenital deformities and malformations of the spine, and (2,27 ± 0,002) % — the consequences of vertebral fractures. In disabled children with dorsopathy the majority (70,53 ± 0,06) % were patients with scoliosis. Conclusion: Scoliosis, congenital deformities and malformations of the spine the most often lead to significant limitation of life and disability in children of all ages. However, among patients from 12 to 18 years, in contrast to other age groups juvenile osteochondrosis, intervertebral disc lesions and spondylopathies in cases of systemic diseases can also be cause of disability.
